Welcome from the Division Director

We welcome you to the Division of Epilepsy at the University of Iowa Health Care!

The UIHC is recognized for innovation, excellence, and leadership in the treatment of epilepsy.

Our physicians and surgeons are national leaders in their respective specialties and constantly strive for excellence by participating and presenting in national/international conferences, as well as conducting clinical and basic science research.

Our Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship educates the next generation of academic epileptologists. Fellows work with adult and child epileptologists in the epilepsy monitoring unit and outpatient clinics, where they are exposed to management of seizures including vagus nerve stimulation and epilepsy surgery.

What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy specialty, or epileptology, is a neurology subspecialty dedicated to diagnosing, treating, and managing epilepsy and seizure disorders.

Epileptologists utilize advanced diagnostic tools, such as electroencephalography (EEG) and neuroimaging, to pinpoint the source of seizures and create personalized treatment plans. These plans can include medications, lifestyle changes, and surgical interventions to control or eliminate seizures and enhance patients' quality of life.

We’re the first and only health system in Iowa accredited as a Level IV epilepsy center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC). This is the highest designation an epilepsy center can achieve. It confirms we have advanced testing that can distinguish epilepsy from nonepileptic seizures. It also verifies that we offer life-changing treatments for people whose epilepsy can’t be controlled with medication (intractable epilepsy).
