Welcome from the Division Director
We welcome you to the Division of Neuromuscular at the University of Iowa Health Care!
The UIHC is recognized for innovation, excellence, and leadership in the treatment of neuromuscular diseases.
Our physicians and surgeons are national leaders in their respective specialties and constantly strive for excellence by participating and presenting in national/international conferences, as well as conducting clinical and basic science research.
Our Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship educates the next generation through a one year, ACGME-accredited program. Fellows become proficient in the diagnosis and management of neuromuscular disorders and the techniques of nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG).

What is Neuromuscular?
Neuromuscular specialty focuses on diagnosing, treating, and managing disorders of the peripheral nervous system, including motor neurons, nerve roots, peripheral nerves, neuromuscular junctions, and muscles.
Neuromuscular neurologists address conditions like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), peripheral neuropathies (e.g., diabetic neuropathy), muscular dystrophies, myopathies, and neuromuscular transmission disorders such as myasthenia gravis.
Our clinics are certified by the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA)—the nation’s leading advocacy group for people with neuromuscular disorders—as MDA Care Centers. This certification is only given to medical centers that offer team-based, research-driven care.
