The Department of Neurology at the University of Iowa is committed to transforming the understanding, prevention, detection, and treatment of major neurological illnesses and issues through its extensive research initiatives.

Funded research in the Department of Neurology spans a large segment of the spectrum of neuroscience investigation. We currently host about 18 individual NIH grants and around 24 NIH subcontracts totaling several million annually, plus an additional half dozen VA Merit Review grants and one CDC grant.

Recently, for example, George Richerson, MD, PhD, professor and head of the Department of Neurology received a 5 year, 3.15 million dollar research grant to investigate causes, predictors, and prevention methods of sudden unexpected deaths in epilepsy, or SUDEP.

We also rely on donations to fund research initiatives, if you are interested in donating please see our donations page.
